"The flesh subordinated to the spirit." A term taken from Ōmoto, a Shinto-derived New Religion. The first sense of this term expresses the principle that the creator deity (sushin) Ōmoto Sume Ō-Mikami's creation began with the spirit world and was completed with the creation of the material world. The second sense follows from the first and indicates a way of living that stresses the primacy of the spiritual and the subordinate nature of the material, which is considered to be the ideal for human beings. In contrast to this is a materialist lifestyle where the spirit is secondary to the flesh, an attitude towards life that can be regarded as selfish and egoistic.
