Dividing the spirit. The term refers to entreating (kanjō) a deity enshrined in one location to impart the divine presence to another location. The deity of such a branch shrine (bunshi, bunsha, niimiya, imamiya) is a divided spirit of the enshrined deity of the main shrine. For example, Iwashimizu-Hachimangū in Kyōto is a branch shrine dedicated to the deity (saijin) of the Usa Shrine in Usa, Oita Prefecture; the Sannō Hie Shrine in Akasaka (Tokyo) is a branch shrine dedicated to the deity of Hiyoshi Shrine in Shiga Prefecture. The deity of the branch shrine and the main shrine are believed to possess equal efficacy.
