Title | Shiwahiko Shrine, Shiogama Shrine Priest Training Institute |
Text | (Shiogama Jinja shinshoku yōseijo) A training institute for shrine priests (see also Shrine Priest Training Institutes) approved by the Association of Shintō Shrines (Jinja Honchō) and run by the shrines Shiwahiko Jinja and Shiogama Jinja. These two shrines were originally separate entities, but were merged in the early Meiji period. The precursor for this training institute was the Shrine Administration Training Scheme (Jitsumu renshūsei seido) set up on the same site in 1930. In 1943, the institute came into being with the sanction of the governor of Miyagi Prefecture. It then acquired the name it retains to this day as well as its function as a regular training institute for shrine priests. With institutional changes that accompanied the end of the war, it was approved by the Association of Shintō Shrines in 1946. Presently it runs a two year training course that confers the priestly rank of seikai upon graduation, and recruits ten high school graduates per year. — Sakamoto Koremaru |
