Title | Otobami shinji |
Text | "Bird feeding rite." A major shrine association (kō) festival held May 15 at Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima Township, Saeki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. There is a ceremonial visitation to the seven Ebisu deities at the seven inlets around the island. Priests (shinshoku) offer norito (prayers) from the sea before Ubuzaki Shrine, after which dumplings made of ritually prepared rice known as shitogi dango are floated out on the sea. Shrine crows (ogarasu) that dwell in the woods around Ubuzaki Shrine fly out and carry the shitogi dumplings off, giving the rite its name. Tradition holds that the deity enshrined at Ubuzaki, Ichikishimahimenomikoto, was guided to her place at the shrine by a male-female pair of ogarasu that flew out to lead her there. — Mogi Sakae |
