Title | Hi-kae shinji |
Text | Fire-Exchange Rite. Held from the night of July 31 through August 1 at Sumiyoshi Shrine (Sumiyoshi taisha) in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. The festival starts with the summer purification ceremonies (nagoshi no harae) held on the thirty-first. On August 1, the portable shrine (mikoshi) is transported to its temporary resting place (o-tabisho) on the shore at Ōhama, in Sakai City. The name of the observance is derived from the fact that people from Sakai come to meet the mikoshi carrying lit pine torches (taimatsu) and lanterns in their hands. The lavish procession is also known as the Sumiyoshi Southern Festival. — Mogi Sakae |
