Title | Harabote matsuri |
Text | A festival held on September 4 and 5 at Suwa Shrine in Yamanakako Village, Minami-Tsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture. On the evening of the fourth, the portable shrine (mikoshi) transported to a temporary resting place. On its return journey on the fifth, the mikoshi is carried by pregnant women. This tradition gives the festival its name, harabote which means "stomach sticking out" (i.e. visibly pregnant). It is believed that carrying the mikoshi will ensure safe birth. The festival is also known as the Safe Birth Festival. — Mogi Sakae |
