Text | Dove-Capturing Festival. A festival held at Atago Shrine in Senmaya Town, Higashi Iwai District, Iwate Prefecture. The festival takes place in mid-August, but the dates vary from year to year. A wooden figure of a phoenix, referred to as ohato ("dove"), is placed on top of an unvarnished portable shrine (mikoshi) which is then paraded through town. Afterwards, the ohato is thrown into the crowd of onlookers, who scramble over it. It is believed that the ohato will bring good luck to the person who manages to get it. — Mogi Sakae |
