Title | Bakemono matsuri |
Text | A costume festival held on May 24 and 25 at the Dazaifu Shrine in Shinmei Town, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. Men and women in crossdress conceal their faces with cloth hoods (zukin) or woven hats (amigasa) and parade through town. The festival traces its origins to a precedent when people concealed their faces with woven hats to see off Sugawara Michizane (845-903) on the occasion of his exile to Dazaifu. On the day of the festival, costumed townspeople were allowed to enter everywhere they pleased. They may even force onlookers to drink sake. — Mogi Sakae |
