Title | Nedari matsuri |
Text | "Blackmail festival." A rite held on the first day of the rooster in November at Toyosumi Shrine in Yui Town, Ihara District, Shizuoka Prefecture. Winter cod, sea bream, and abalone are served on cutting boards for a ritual banquet meal. The size of each serving is fixed, and without touching them participants complain about their being too small. The cooking is also criticized. The shrine priests (shinshoku) try to defend themselves but their excuses are mostly ignored, and the ritual ends when the shinshoku eventually flee the scene. This ritual is likely one of the same sort as the akutai matsuri ("cursing festival"). — Mogi Sakae |
