Title
Toshishiba no shinji
Text
A rite held January 6 at Sunami Shrine in Sakutō Township, Aida District, Okayama Prefecture. The priest attaches packets of rice and beans wrapped in Japanese paper (washi) to small branches of sakaki. The branches are then bundled into groups of three and offered to the altar as a prayer for an abundant harvest. Each parishioner (ujiko) takes home one bunch (called a sanbaidoshi) apiece, which they place on their household altar (kamidana) for the deity that visits during the New Year's season (see toshigami). The sanbaidoshi are erected in the bed for rice seedlings on January 11, the first day of hoeing. In central Japan, Sanbaisama is the name of the kami of rice paddies (tanokami).
