Text
"Exorcism ceremony." A setsubun event held in February at Nagata Shrine in Nagata Ward, Kobe City, Hyōgo Prefecture. Artificial flower arrangements (kazaribana) made by hanging small rice cakes and mandarin oranges from several large willow branches are strung up on the pillars to the right and left of the hall of worship (haiden). The hall itself is decorated with two large round rice cakes festooned with sakaki leaves known as the "Sun and Moon rice cakes" (hitsuki no mochi); 64 small rice cakes wrapped in sakaki leaves that are said to represent the 64 ancient provinces of Japan; and 12 "demon" (oni)rice cakes—said to represent the 12 months of the year—tied into groups of six with arrowroot twine and placed on a cutting board. Seven people dressed as demons and carrying torches come out and dance on a stage erected in front of the hall of worship. After circling the main shrine buildings (shaden; see "Introduction: Jinja"), the "rice-cake-splitting oni" (mochiwari oni) appears and attempts to cut the Sun and Moon rice cakes using a battleaxe and a mallet before being chased away by the crowd.
