Title
Sumomo matsuri
Text
"Plum festival." A festival held July 20 at Ōkunitama Shrine in Fuchū City, Tokyo Prefecture, in which special food offerings (shinsen) of plums and rice with chestnuts are offered to the kami. Eating plums on the day of the festival is said to exorcise evil spirits and prevent summer maladies. Fans on which crows have been drawn are distributed to the worshipers with the belief that waving the fans over the fields prevents insects from attacking the crops. The festival was considerably larger than the same shrine's Kurayama matsuri before the mid-Edo period.
