"Rice seedling encouragement rite." A rite held some time during the last ten days of June, on the 60th day after rice seeds have been planted, at Awa Shrine in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Early in the morning on the day of the ritual, seedlings plucked from the seed beds are offered up at the altar and a ceremony takes place. The rite itself entails saotome (rice-planting girls), priests (shinshoku), and festival attendees planting the seedlings in the shrine field (shinden) to the accompaniment of rice-planting songs.
A rite of the same name is also held July 13—the day after the rice-planting festival (taue matsuri)—at Isasumi Shrine in Aizutakada Township, Ōnuma District, Fukushima Prefecture. Also known as the maguwa'arai matsuri ("wash the harrow festival"), all work stops for a day—a practice referred to as kuwakamadome ("putting down the hoe and scythe")— in villages throughout the Aizu region in order to celebrate.
