Title | Sakaki matsuri |
Text | "Sakaki festival." A festival held August 15 at Ōtomo Shrine in Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. This violent festival is a roughhousing competition, where participants fashion branches of Japanese oak (nara) into a pair of rods known as sakaki-sama. All the participants affix branches of sakaki to their bodies. In the past, it is also said that one person each would take one of the sakaki-sama and violently force their way into people's houses. At around seven in the evening, a fire is built on Mt. Taimatsu and around one hundred young men bearing torches run down the mountain. — Mogi Sakae |
