Title
Hinokuma, Kunikakasu
Text [Hinokuma no kami.Kunikakasu no kami] (Nihongi)
Central kami (saijin) at the Hinokuma Kunikakasu Shrines. At the time of Amaterasu's retreat into the rock cave of heaven, the kami Ishikoridome cast a "sun-image mirror," but his first attempt was imperfect. This first mirror is interpreted by some as Hinokuma no kami; others suggest that one mirror was Hinokuma, while a "sun-spear" (hiboko) mirror mentioned in an alternative Nihongi account was Kunikakasu no kami.

According to other legends, these divine objects were entrusted to Amenomichine no mikoto at the time of the descent of the Imperial grandchild to the peak of Takachiho (see tenson kōrin). They were subsequently enshrined in their present location in the sixteenth year of Emperor Sujin's reign, and their worship was maintained by the hereditary provincial governors of Kii province (Ki no Kuni no miyatsuko), said to be the descendants of Amenomichine no mikoto.
