Title | Gairaishin |
Text | In general terms, a kami which has arrived "from outside." The expression itself, however, is very ambiguous, and is used in a variety of ways, with the result that it has not been fully accepted as an academic term. Historical usage, however, points generally to a tripartite classification, including (1) "foreign kami" (banshin) which have arrived from another country, in contrast to Japan's indigenous tenjin chigi; (2) a kami which is not indigenous, but invited from outside the local community and accepted as a marōdokami (guest kami); and (3) a traveling kami (raihōshin) which periodically visits the local village community, bringing felicitations and blessings. -Iwai Hiroshi |
