Karidono
Text
Also called kariden. A "provisional hall" used to temporarily house the divine emblem (shintai), as opposed to the main sanctuary (honden). Such provisional structures are necessary when rebuilding or repairing the main shrine, in cases of disaster, or when installing a new object of worship. At such times, a karidono is used to shelter the object of worship until the main shrine is prepared for use. In many cases, a temporary karidono will be newly built as needed, but some shrines maintain permanent karidono, which may be called by such terms as senden ("removal hall"), utsushidono ("moving hall"), or gonden ("ancillary hall"). In other cases, such as at the Grand Shrines of Ise, existing shrine structures (such as the tōhōden, mikeden, or imibiyaden) may be selected in advance and designated to serve as kariden. The ritual moving of a kami's emblem to a kariden is called a kariden sengū ("removal to a kariden").
