Title
Heiden
Text
A shrine structure built to hold sacred offerings or heihaku, but most commonly constructed as a link between a shrine's sanctuary (honden) and hall of worship (haiden). In the architectural style called Gongen-zukuri, when the stone floor of the heiden is constructed at a level below that of the honden and haiden, it is called the ishi no ma ("stone room"). In some cases, the structure corresponding to the heiden goes by the name chūden (middle hall) or other terms. At present, rather than being a simple repository of offerings, the heiden is most frequently used as a location for the performance of rituals.
