Kitanotenjin'engi | 北野天神縁起
Text Origins of the Kitano Tenjin Shrine. A record of the origins and history of Kitano Tenmangū, focusing on the acts of Sugawara no Michizane, both during his life and after his deification as the kami Tenman Tenjin. The work is deeply infused with notions of goryō shinkō (spirit worship) and Tenjin shinkō (Tenjin worship). Completed early in the Kamakura period (late twelfth century). It is likely that the initiator of the work, as well as the calligrapher of its text, is the Tendai abbot (zasu) Jien (1155-1225), but scholars also suggest that the work's completion or at least its initiation came from shasō (shrine Buddhist priests). The Kenkyū (1190-99) and Kenpō (1214-19) texts lack illustrations, but the Jōkyū (1219-22) text takes the form of an illustrated handscroll (emaki), and is referred to as the "fundamental origin account" (konpon engi). Several related versions survive, most notably Matsuzaki Tenjin engi in the collection of the Hōfu Tenman shrine in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and the Egara Tenjin engi at the Egara Tenjin shrine in Kamakura. Many Tenjin shrines throughout Japan also have their own origin accounts, attesting to the major role played by this text in the diffusion of Tenjin worship. See alsoTenjin shinkō(Tenjin worship)
