| Text | "'First water of the year' festival." A rite for drawing the first water of the year held on New Year's Day at Himukai Shrine in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto. A rite takes place at 3 a.m. in which the first waters are drawn from the Asahi spring on the shrine grounds (keidai). The water is distributed to worshippers along with a kōyōsai amulet for prosperity of family businesses. The custom of drawing first water at New Year's as an annual event is a widely distributed one throughout the country; many shrines besides this one also conduct this as one of their rites. — Mogi Sakae |
