Title | Hatsu'u matsuri | 初卯祭 |
Text | Before the second world war, this ritual was held on the first day of the Rabbit (hatsu'u) in both May and November at Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A period of abstinence called chinsai is observed during the seven days preceding the festival. During this time, there is also a variety of taboos (kinki) to be followed by the parishioners. The festival is said to have its origin in Empress Jingū's worship of the kami of Sumiyoshi on the day of the Rabbit prior to her invasion of the Korean Peninsula.
