Text | This work, in one volume, is the first half of the important medieval Ise Shintō text, Daijingū jingi hongi, and this set is completed by Yamato hime no mikoto seiki, which is the last half. Using parts of the classical texts Nihon shoki and Kojiki, it lists the divine genealogy, the variant names of the deities, and their acts. It is believed that this work was compiled by officials of the Outer Shrine (gekū) of Ise sometime in the middle years of the Kamakura period because of the peculiar nature of the work which portrays Toyouke Ōmikami as the great founding deity Ame no Minaka Nushi, and places her along side the sun goddess (Amaterasu) as the supreme, most venerated deity of worship in Shinto. In the medieval period this work is often quoted in various Shinto texts, and it had a great impact on the development and formation of Shinto thinking; however, there are only two surviving manuscripts of this work, one at Matsunoo Shrine, and the other at Kōgakkan University. This work is contained in Daijingū sōsho, first volume of Watarai Shintō Taisei (1955, Jingū Shichō). Also volume one of Shintō shiryō sōkan, published by the Shintō Research Institute at Kōgakkan University contains a facsimile of the manuscript with an introduction. — Ban Isoshirō |
