Taisha Kokugakukan
Text
The Taisha Kokugakukan (Izumo Shrine Priest Training College) is a Jinja Honchō-approved training institute for shrine priests (shinshoku) managed by Izumo Taisha. Izumo established the institute within the shrine precincts in 1938 to promote Shintō-based ethics. Training of shrine priests was conducted at the shrine as well. The institute closed down in 1948 in the chaos that accompanied defeat in the war, but in 1956 re-opened when the Jinja Honchō was approved as a training college for shrine priests. At present, the college offers three training tracks. Two of these are for high school graduates: a regular course leading up to seikai rank, which takes two years and admits about fifteen candidates a year, and an elective course for gonseikai rank, which takes one year (admitting just a few candidates a year). Additionally, there is a supplementary course of one year for middle school graduates. On average twenty students join the college annually.
