Title | Ukehi |
Text | Trial by pledge. Generally indicates the act of divination, determining the divine will regarding the positive or negative, auspicious or inauspicious nature, or the success or failure of an act. Ukehi points to uttering certain magical words to achieve a specific outcome, then determining the divine will in terms of the result. A typical example is the episode concerning Amaterasu and Susanoo found in Nihon shoki. Susanoo vowed that the birth of female children between them would be proof of his impure heart, while that of males would attest to his pure heart. The subsequent birth of five male deities (see gonansanjoshin) proved that he had no evil intentions. — Nishioka Kazuhiko |
