Title | Ōtonoji |
Text | [Ōtonoji no kami] (Kojiki) Other names: Ōtonoji no mikoto (Nihongi) The male member of the fifth pair in the first seven generations of the "age of kami." Nihongi also includes variant traditions under the names Ōtonobe no mikoto, Ōtomahiko no mikoto, and Ōtomuji no mikoto. Ōtonoji was the male counterpart to Ōtonobe (or Ōtomabe). Various suggestions have been made regarding the meaning of the kami's name, including a deification of the country, a gate-guarding kami, or a symbol of the completion of a dwelling. -Inoue Nobutaka |
