Held on April 1, this is the annual festival (reitaisai) of the Ōyamato Shrine in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture. On the day before the festival, participants in the sacred procession (togyo) present offerings of taihei (large nusa, ritual purification wands) at the shrine. In a ceremony called the "night festival crossing" (yoimiya watashi), the priest (shinshoku) receives the taihei and makes a ritual offering (hōbei) reciting a ritual chant (norito). The Chan-chan matsuri begins at ten o'clock the next morning, and, after having transferred the deity (mitama utsushi) to the sacred palanquin (shin'yo) at approximately two o'clock, the procession sets forth. The name of the festival is derived from the syllables "chan-chan," representing the sound of the bells that accompany the procession to the otabisho (temporary resting place). The procession is the largest of its kind among festivals in the Yamato area which involve a deity's journey from one place to another (shinkō). Rites performed at the otabisho include offerings (kensen) of steamed rice cakes (chimaki mochi) and dedications (hōnō) of artistic performances.
