Title | Shioyu |
Text | "Tidal bath." A portable shrine (shin'yo) purification rite held the 14th day of the sixth lunar month at Sumiyoshi Shrine (Sumiyoshi Taisha) in Sumiyoshi Ward, Ōsaka City, Ōsaka Prefecture. The shrine to be used in the "last the summer" festival (nagoshi matsuri) held July 31 is carried to the shore on the western side of Sumiyoshi Shrine for a ritual purification in the sea. This is called shioyu. There is a tradition which states that a great whale rode the tidal currents from Kumano and came to Sumiyoshi Cove. Bathing in these currents is said to cure illness, so many people come to bathe in the seawater. The ritual is also known as the Sumiyoshi no oyu ("the bathwaters of Sumiyoshi"), the oyusai ("the bathwater festival"), and the doroyu ("the muddy bath"). — Mogi Sakae |
