Title
Sarutori matsuri
Text
A festival originally held on the first sarutori ("monkey cockerel") day of the eleventh lunar month, and now held December 4–5 at Tsuno Shrine in Koyu District, Miyazaki Prefecture. The festival is followed by a kagura performance held before a "mountain" made in the area in front of the hall of worship (haiden) by piling up branches of Japanese chinquapin. The festival has been known as the fuyu matsuri ("winter festival") since the change to the December date. The festival held on the first day of the monkey in the eleventh lunar month on the so-called Five Islands (gotōrettō) of Nagasaki Prefecture is also called the sarutori matsuri. Children form groups and go around visiting houses, getting one go (0.18 liters) of rice from each. They then gather together at an inn, make rice ball dumplings (dango) from the rice they have collected, and eat them.
