Title
Hayatamanoo
Text (Nihongi)
The first kami appearing after Izanagi went to the underworld of Yomi and parted from his deceased spouse Izanami, according to an "alternate writing" recorded in Nihongi. Although Izanagi traveled to the underworld to visit Izanami, he broke his vow not to look at her decaying state, and this betrayal led to their second separation. Unable to part silently, Izanagi said, "Let us be divorced," and "I will not be beaten by a relation"; the spittle which he then spat out became this kami, whose name means "man of valiant spirit." Hayatamanoo is the central deity (saijin) of the Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
