Title | Yamaboko |
Text | One type of float (dashi) used in festival processions. A "mountain" or other shape is constructed on top of a wheeled platform and topped by a spear or halberd. This kind of float is said to have developed from the Heian-period shirushi no yama ("sign-mountain") which were constructed using various decorations sent from the two ritual geographical regions called Yuki and Suki for the Heian-period festival of enthronement (Daijōsai). The yamaboko of the Gion Festival at the Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto are especially famous. They were first constructed in response to an epidemic that threatened the country in 869. Sixty-six portable shrines (shin'yo), corresponding to the number of provinces in the country at the time were constructed and decorated with erected spears, and drawn to the shinsen'en imperial gardens, where ritual exorcism was carried out.
