Also called nigitahe, one type of heihaku, or white cloth or unwoven threads of flax (asa), paper mulberry (yū ), or silk offered to the kami. According to the divine age chapters of Kojiki, when Amaterasu hid herself in the heavenly rock cave, Amenokoyane no mikoto used a number of ritual implements, including the evergreen sakaki tree, from which white and blue strips of nigite cloth were suspended. Nigite made from the bast of paper mulberry was called "white," and that which was made from flax was called "blue." Other names for especially beautiful or bright nigite include akarute, akarunigite, and terutae. See also heihaku.
