Text	Deity worshiped at the three shrines of Hongû, Shingû, and Nachi in the Kumano region of Wakayama Prefecture. Belief in Kumano became especially widespread during the middle ages. Reverence was paid by the imperial court, rites performed by the shrine priests (oshi) drew the common people, and branches of the Kumano shrines were established throughout the country.
