Foreword to Reprinted Edition

The demand for this work has not ceased, and indeed, has increased in recent years. In order to respond to the needs of the individual doing genuine research in Shinto, a completely new version is needed, but lacking the resources to attempt that project at present, we have limited ourselves to making minimal corrections to the already existing work, and hope thus to answer the present demand.

The majority of this reprint edition was reedited by J. C. Takai, and a few entries have been added or deleted. Many illustrations were presented by Jinja Honcho (The Association of Shinto Shrines). We hope that this work will thus continue to be of service to those with an interest in the Shinto religion.
