Kanbe
Text
Also read as kantomo and kantomono'o, refers to people involved in rites for the kami. Under the Ritsuryō system, kanbe were low-level appointees to the Jingikan and participated in ritual and miscellaneous tasks. There were thirty such kanbe, according to the "Shokuin ryō" section of the Yōrō Code. According to the Kogoshūi, the Nakatomi, Inbe, Sarume, Kagamitsukuri, Tamatsukuri, Tatenui, Kanhatori, Shizuri, and the Omi families were among those listed as kanbe. In Nihon shoki, in the chapter from the second month of 602 (the tenth year of Empress Suiko's reign), kanbe are mentioned as part of a fighting force: "The Imperial Prince Kume was appointed General for the invasion of Silla [Shiragi], and was granted the various kantomono'o [kanbe], together with the kuni no miyatsuko and tomo no miyatsuko [high-ranking families close to the Yamato court], making an army of twenty-five thousand men." Engi saigū shiki also mentions kanbe, saying that following a divination (bokujō) to determine who should be the itsuki no miko (an imperial princess in service at the Ise or Kamo Shrines, see saiin and saigū), Jingikan kanbe proceeded to the house of the chosen princess and attached sakaki affixed with streamers (see nusa) to its four gates and inside and outside the residence.
