Tagitsuhime
Text [Tagitsu hime no mikoto](Kojiki)(Nihongi)
One of the three female kami produced as a result of the trial by oath (ukei) between Amaterasu and Susanoo. As her part of the test, Amaterasu took Susanoo's sword and broke it in many pieces, rinsing the fragments in the True Well of Heaven, then chewing up and spewing out the results. Tagitsuhime was produced in the spray. The fact that the three kami thus produced were females was taken as evidence of Susanoo's sincerity, and Amaterasu commanded the three to descend to the earth. There, they were enshrined by the Munakata and Minuma clans in Tsukushi (Kyushu) and came to be called the "three goddesses of Munakata." At present, Tagitsuhime is enshrined at the Nakatsugū, one of three individual shrines making up the shrine complex Munakata Taisha. All three goddesses are believed to have been sea kami responsible for protecting ocean traffic on the Genkai Sea. See also Ichikishimahime and Tagorihime.
